Nigeria Targets 5 Million Smart Meters by 2027 as Power Sector Embraces Smarter Electricity Management
Nigeria is intensifying efforts to modernise electricity metering across the country, with the Federal Government targeting the deployment of five million smart meters by 2027.
The initiative is part of the Presidential Metering Initiative and is designed to address one of the longstanding challenges in Nigeria's electricity sector: the gap between electricity supplied to customers and electricity accurately measured and billed.
Why Smart Meters Matter
Traditional electricity billing has often been associated with estimated bills, disputes and difficulties determining how much electricity individual customers actually consume.
Smart meters provide a more accurate way of measuring electricity consumption. They can also support remote monitoring and improve the flow of information between electricity customers and service providers.
According to the Federal Ministry of Power, the smart-metering initiative is expected to help reduce Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection losses while improving revenue collection and accountability across the electricity supply chain.
5,000 Young Nigerians to Be Trained
A major part of the programme is the Power Force Programme, which was launched to train 5,000 young Nigerians as certified metering technicians.
Beyond installing meters, the programme is expected to create opportunities for young people in technical services, electrical installation, maintenance and related areas.
The broader metering initiative is also projected to create more than 20,000 jobs for local assemblers and installers.
What This Means for Electricity Customers
For consumers, wider smart-meter deployment could mean greater transparency in electricity billing.
Instead of relying primarily on estimated consumption, customers can have their electricity usage measured through an installed meter. This can make it easier for households and businesses to monitor their consumption and manage their electricity expenses.
Businesses can also benefit from better energy monitoring, particularly those that operate equipment with significant electricity requirements.
Building a Smarter Electricity System
Smart meters are becoming an important component of modern electricity networks. Beyond measuring consumption, advanced metering infrastructure can provide useful information for electricity providers and support better management of the distribution network.
Nigeria's push to expand metering therefore goes beyond simply replacing old meters. It is part of a broader effort to make the electricity sector more transparent, efficient and data-driven.
As the country continues investing in electrical infrastructure, the demand for quality meters, protection devices, wiring accessories and professional electrical installation services is also likely to grow.
