Nigeria is pushing ahead with the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its broader move toward cleaner and more efficient transportation. However, the country’s electricity supply and charging infrastructure remain significant challenges to the transition.
In the first half of 2026, nearly 4,000 electric vehicles received tax exemptions under a government programme designed to encourage EV adoption. The government has also expanded its electric mobility strategy and is working toward the development of EV charging infrastructure across the country.
The challenge is that electric vehicles require dependable access to electricity. Nigeria’s power system continues to face reliability and infrastructure constraints, while many households and businesses still depend on petrol and diesel generators for backup power.
Limited public charging stations add another challenge. EV owners may have to rely on charging at home or at private locations, making access to reliable electricity particularly important.
Electric motorcycles and three-wheelers are emerging as an important part of Nigeria’s electric mobility transition. Battery-swapping networks are also being developed, offering an alternative to conventional charging for some users.
The development of electric vehicles could create new opportunities across Nigeria’s energy sector. More EVs will increase demand for charging infrastructure, batteries, solar power systems, inverters, energy storage and electrical installations.
Solar energy and battery storage could also play an important role in supporting EV charging, particularly in locations where grid electricity is unreliable. A properly designed solar and battery system can provide an alternative source of electricity for charging and reduce dependence on fuel-powered generators.
Nigeria’s EV transition therefore goes beyond simply introducing electric cars. It also requires investment in electricity generation, distribution networks, charging stations, battery technology and renewable energy.
As the country continues to develop its electric mobility ecosystem, strengthening the power sector will be essential to making electric transportation practical and sustainable.
