Nigeria’s electricity sector is intensifying efforts to improve the stability and reliability of the national power grid as operators continue to face generation, transmission and system-management challenges.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) to improve grid stability, reliability and resilience.
The call was made during a two-day workshop on strengthening grid stability for electricity-sector stakeholders held at the Jebba Power Station.
According to NISO, the power system continues to operate under complex conditions, including generation and transmission constraints, changing electricity demand patterns, frequency disturbances and voltage-security challenges.
Frequency disturbances can occur when there are sudden changes in electricity generation or demand. They can also be linked to faults, inadequate system inertia, inaccurate forecasting and the response of generating units during major system events.
Maintaining a stable electricity grid requires generation, transmission and distribution systems to work together effectively. When one part of the system experiences a major disruption, it can affect electricity supply across other parts of the network.
The development is important for Nigerian businesses and households that depend on a stable supply of electricity for daily operations. Power interruptions can affect production, business activities, equipment and operating costs.
The growing use of distributed energy solutions is also becoming relevant in this environment. Solar systems, batteries and inverters can provide alternative or backup sources of electricity for homes and businesses, helping users reduce their dependence on the national grid.
However, distributed energy solutions are not a replacement for a strong national grid. A reliable electricity system requires continued investment in generation capacity, transmission infrastructure, distribution networks, metering, system protection and modern grid-management technologies.
Nigeria’s power sector is therefore facing the challenge of improving the existing grid while also adapting to new sources of electricity, changing demand patterns and growing interest in renewable energy.
As electricity demand continues to increase, stronger coordination between power generators, transmission operators, distribution companies, regulators and other industry stakeholders will remain important.
