The U.S. energy storage industry is experiencing rapid growth, with utility-scale battery storage capacity reaching nearly 52 gigawatts (GW) in the first half of 2026.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), operators added approximately 8.3 GW of battery storage capacity during the first six months of 2026. This pushed total U.S. battery storage capacity significantly above the 43.6 GW recorded at the end of 2025.
The growth represents part of a much larger trend. EIA data shows that U.S. utility-scale battery storage capacity has grown at an average annual rate of about 70% over the past three years.
Battery storage is becoming increasingly important as electricity systems add more renewable energy, particularly solar power. Solar generation is strongest during daylight hours, while electricity demand often remains high later in the day. Batteries can store electricity when supply is high and release it when demand increases.
The growth of battery storage is also helping electricity operators manage fluctuations in power supply, improve grid flexibility and reduce pressure during periods of high demand.
Solar and battery storage are increasingly being developed together. One example highlighted by the EIA is the Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm in California, which combines 500 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity with 500 MW of battery storage capacity.
The U.S. expansion is not expected to stop at the current 52 GW. Operators have reported plans to add another 54 GW of battery storage capacity through 2028, including approximately 14 GW planned for the second half of 2026, 26 GW in 2027 and another 14 GW in 2028.
The rapid expansion of energy storage demonstrates how batteries are becoming an important part of modern power systems. As electricity demand increases and renewable energy expands, storage technology can help make electricity supply more flexible and reliable.
