Africa’s solar industry is entering another major phase of growth, with the continent expected to install a record 17 GW of solar power in 2026.
According to new analysis from Ember, around three-quarters of this year's expected solar additions will come from distributed solar systems. These include rooftop installations, commercial solar systems, mini-grids and other smaller-scale projects located closer to electricity consumers.
The rapid expansion reflects a growing need for reliable and affordable electricity across the continent. Instead of depending entirely on large centralised power plants and national grids, more homes and businesses are turning to solar systems that can generate electricity closer to where it is needed.
Distributed solar is particularly important in markets where grid electricity remains unreliable or where extending traditional electricity infrastructure is expensive.
Nigeria is among the African markets experiencing strong growth in distributed solar. Businesses and households are increasingly adopting solar panels, batteries and inverters to reduce dependence on conventional backup generators and improve the reliability of their electricity supply.
