Nigeria Launches $300 Million Renewable Energy Fund to Expand Solar Power Access

Nigeria has launched a $300 million Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Fund aimed at expanding access to reliable electricity through solar home systems, mini-grids, battery storage and other decentralised energy solutions.

The fund is managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Africa50, with Sustainable Energy for All providing energy-access leadership and the World Bank serving as a founding partner. The initiative was announced in September 2026, with the commercial launch reported in October.

What Will the Fund Support?

The initiative is designed to attract investment into renewable energy projects serving communities and businesses that experience unreliable electricity supply or have limited access to the national grid.

Its focus includes:

  • Solar home systems: Providing households with alternatives to unreliable grid electricity.
  • Solar mini-grids: Supplying electricity to underserved communities and local businesses.
  • Battery energy storage: Helping users store electricity for use when solar generation is low or unavailable.
  • Commercial and industrial solar: Supporting businesses that need more dependable power to operate efficiently.

The World Bank is contributing an initial $25 million through the International Development Association toward the fund's $300 million target.

What Does This Mean for Nigerian Businesses?

Reliable electricity is essential for businesses that depend on computers, refrigeration, lighting, security equipment and other electrical systems. Investment in distributed renewable energy could create more opportunities for companies involved in solar installation, electrical engineering, battery storage, equipment supply and maintenance.

However, funding alone will not guarantee successful projects. Proper system design, suitable equipment, professional installation and reliable after-sales support will remain important.

The Growing Role of Solar and Battery Storage

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, while battery storage allows suitable systems to retain energy for later use. When properly designed, these systems can help households and businesses reduce their dependence on generators and improve power availability.

As Nigeria expands its renewable energy market, customers should consider their actual electricity needs, equipment quality, battery capacity, installation standards and long-term maintenance costs before investing.
