U.S. Solar Capacity Reaches New Milestone, Now Enough to Power Over 50 Million Homes

The United States has reached a major milestone in solar energy, with its installed solar capacity now sufficient to generate electricity equivalent to the needs of more than 50 million homes.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie, the U.S. solar industry added 11.4 GW of new capacity in the second quarter of 2026. This represents a 45% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

The latest growth has been driven largely by utility-scale solar projects, which accounted for 9.6 GW of the new capacity installed during the quarter.

The milestone highlights the growing importance of solar power as electricity demand continues to increase. Solar is also increasingly being combined with battery storage to provide electricity beyond daylight hours and improve grid reliability.

For countries such as Nigeria, where reliable electricity remains a major challenge, the continued expansion of solar and storage globally demonstrates the growing role of decentralized energy solutions.

As solar technology becomes more widespread, businesses, households and energy providers have greater opportunities to reduce dependence on conventional power sources while improving energy resilience.

The U.S. experience also shows how rapidly solar markets can scale when investment, technology and infrastructure develop together.
